• Governance and Leadership: As a Commissioner for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for six years, participated in the selection of over 5,000 award holders from across the Commonwealth, supporting cutting edge research, innovation and knowledge exchange that strengthen health systems, and promote access, inclusion and opportunity for disadvantaged groups. Member of the Finance Committee (budget of GBP£30million per annum), and the Audit and Risk Committee, with responsibility for monitoring the awards to ensure successful delivery in accordance with strategic objectives, fiscal responsibilities, legal compliance, risk management, reputation and quality standards.
  • Training: Strengthened pathways to impact at the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission through co-creation of online training course on development impact for annual cohort of 900 scholars, and facilitated residential training weekends for up to 80 scholars to develop leadership, influencing and advocacy skills.
  • Advisory: Provided advice on how to strengthen alumni engagement at the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, and the key themes for annual time limited programmes that focus on local community development, with an emphasis on the importance of small changes for big impact, and assess applications for their potential to be replicated or scaled up.
  • Education Tanzania: Led process of co-creation for model of inclusive education for pre-primary and primary education in Tanzania, in collaboration with government institutions, NGOs, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, and Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO). The model has been incorporated into the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and is being scaled up across Tanzania.
  • Global Project Development: Led process of co-creation of multi-country inclusive education project of GBP£1million for a philanthropic donor, involving nine teams across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the UK, including agreeing programme priorities, themes and budget allocations.
  • Evaluation Tanzania: Evaluated the first ever Sign Language Interpretation Course at the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, helping ensure its sustainability, and increase access to services and information for deaf children and young people across government and public institutions, and the media.
  • Evaluation Malawi: Evaluation of DFID Malawi’s school improvement programme, resulted in improving retention of adolescent girls in primary schools, improving learning outcomes for boys and girls, and positive behaviour change of teachers.
  • Evaluation Malawi: Evaluation of Sightsavers’ inclusive education programme in Malawi, led to more effective inclusion of blind children in schools, improving learning outcomes, and reducing stigma and discrimination in the community.
  • Research Mozambique and Tanzania: Researched care provision by older people for HelpAge International in Mozambique and Tanzania, helping create awareness and understanding of the impact of HIV/AIDS, and create evidence base to help improve and protect the rights of older people.
  • Evaluation Mozambique: Evaluation of Practical Action’s Disaster Mitigation programme in Mozambique helped increase understanding of the links between smallholder farmers and climate change, and contribute to improving food security and flood resilience in vulnerable communities.
  • Training and Advocacy Malawi: Successfully campaigned and facilitated social change at the community level through training 150 border officials at the five main border posts in Malawi in communication skills to prevent Avian Influenza entering Malawi.
  • Research and Writing: Writer/editor of ‘To Whom It May Concern’ – a book celebrating 10 years of democracy in South Africa, foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, highlighting stories of resilience, adversity and fortitude that contributed to the end of apartheid, and the formation of a democratic government.
